Last night saw the under 18's in action against Long Stratton Mens at Trafford Park, in their first friendly of the pre-season phase.
With the season starting early on in september, it doesn't give the coaches much time to settle themselves with a set squad for the season.
Due to the ages of the new players that have joined the squad this season, it was sensible of manager Rob Steward to leave out the majority of the younger players as these were a mens team and some of the young lads may not be physically prepared.
The first half wroxham dominated fully for the full 45 minutes. With constant pressure from the new strike force, Stratton found themselves deep in their half for a lot of the half. Chance after chance went by with Cousins, Harty and others all making the Stratton keeper work, but 20 minutes in, an excellent individual run from Ben Church, saw him brought down just inside the area and the ref had no choice but to blow up. Sam Harty stepped up and slotted it tightly into the bottom right hand side of the goal giving the keeper no chance.
Oppertunities kept coming for Wroxham and they were certainly on the front foot as 10 minutes before half time, Rio Starkings rose high above the Stratton striker who was man marking him, nicknamed 'Crouchy' and nodded it into the right hand side of the goal. Wroxham went in at half time 2 goals to the good.
Mass changes to the Wroxham side for the second half, taking off the players who are involved with the reserves this evening in their opening game of the season against Kirkley and Pakefield. Also a swap of goalkeepers from Wengrow to Plumbstead. Also the appearance of young striker Ryan Guild who is 15.
Although the change in squad, the quality of football and the pressure did not drop. 3 more goals followed in this half for wroxham, among the scorers substitutes Ryan Guild and Kyran Goreham.
Stratton pulled one back in the dying minutes when suspision of hand ball from one of the Stratton strikers was ignored by the referee, who was adimant it was a Wroxham player to handle, then the ball was slotted into the back of the net.
Wroxham showed great signs of things to come this season last night and im sure there will be a alot more to show very soon!
The under 18's travel to Fakenham on Monday night for their final friendly before the season breaks out against Harford CEYMS.
Final result: Wroxham 5-1 Long Stratton Men
