Excellent 2-0 win yesterday for our reserves away at St Andrews. We arrived at the ground with one or two changes from last week’s squad and also welcomed the new management team of Laurence York and Dave Harty for their debut in full charge, I’m sure they will be a big success.
The changes in the squad consisted of a few more experienced heads coming into the team and this was probably the difference between the today’s result and our last trip away at Kirkley where we could not find that killer quality touch near goal. In for today’s came Graham Challen at Centre half, Olly Savage at left back along with Ben Jones and Danny Boswell in midfield. We also had young and up and coming talent Adam Wengrow, along with his more famous hair style, in the sticks! In addition we kept the nucleus of last weeks side with Rio Starkings making a formidable looking centre half partnership with Graham Challen , Sam Harty reverting back to right back, the inform Ashley Mitchell out on the left wing ,Jordan Southgate joining Danny Boswell in centre midfield leaving the cultured Jordan Mace up top with the ever willing and industrious Luke Thacker up top. We also welcomed experienced new signing Olly Dingli on the bench.
On paper this looked a tough game at St Andrews as their side contained no fewer than 5 players who have played for Wroxham recently and two of them actually featured regularly for the first team last season so definitely no mugs .Pre match managers York and Harty impressed this upon the lads and told them that they could easily become a casualty here if they didn’t concentrate and do their individual jobs at their best. The game itself started off in much the vein of most local derbies with both teams a little tentative and and may be rushing things a little too much but after 15 mins the game settled down and both sides played some half decent stuff with St Andrews probably holding the upper hand in those first minutes. But once our lads got their game collectively we certainly started to look the better side and on more than one occasion cut through the Saints rearguard with some excellent flowing moves which in all honesty was a joy to watch. In particular on our flanks where our very young starlets Ben Jones and Ashley Mitchell were giving their full backs a torrid time and with Jordan Mace holding the ball up well and Luke Thacker looking more and more threatening every game it looked only a matter of time before we scored. At he back we were looking solid as you might expect from such a quality back four and even when they were breached Adam Wengrow brought off some terrific saves ,one in particular in the first period when their player was one-on-one with him. Sadly for us though we conceded totally against the run of play (nothing new there I know!) and it did look for a brief moment that lady luck had deserted us again. But the lads kept their quality short pass game going and with our midfield pairing of Danny Boswell and Jordan Southgate working tirelessly to get the ball back we soon equalized through a Olly Savage free kick from just outside the box. Just reward for Olly who was putting in a real hard working and tough tackling display at left back. Soon after half time came and in at 1-1.
Time for managers York and Harty to give their insight into affairs and to be perfectly honest there was not much they could say apart from keep plugging away and the rewards will come. They also gave one or two players a bit of advice on how to benefit from their hard gained possession but on the whole it was mostly cautious praise. So back out after the break and we pretty well carried on in this game where we finished off with Saints having one or two decent chances but us having some real guilt edged ones with Luke Thacker ,in particular, having 2 or 3 one on ones with the keeper but failing to just have the cool head to put them away. This is certainly no slur on Luke though as he worked tirelessly throughout the game and at times ran the St Andrews back four ragged and certainly looks a real prospect in the next couple of years. Eventually we got the break we deserved when another surging Luke Thacker run ended with him being up ended in the box and Young full back Sam Harty, showing nerves of steel ,slotted the resulting penalty away with some style. Definitely just reward for our excellent display so far in this game. And even after we got that eventual winner we still kept on passing and playing and one particular passage of play involving Olly Savage and Luke Thacker where we struck the crossbar ,was probably one of the best examples of “Barcelona” style football that I have ever witnessed in my time with the reserves and I’m sure all the watching crowd must have been impressed with our lads performance today. So final whistle and a great 3 points away from home.
Great credit to Lawrence and Dave who from the off told the lads the right way to play and with their crystal clear instruction a great footballing display and even more pleasing result followed.
Great all round team performance from all the lads today. Rio Starkings looked immense at the back along side the always impressive and vociferous Graham Challen. Young Ben Jones looked every inch a quality performer and showed great technique in possession along with the returning Danny Boswell who ran and competed for every thing in midfield and also found time to set up many attacks with his excellent passing ability. Up top Jordan Mace and young Luke Thacker looked a good partnership with Luke in particular showing what a find he is and I have to say it made me feel tired in the dug out watching him sprint 40 yards every 5 mins chasing through balls!!
But performance of the day for me was from Olly Savage. Although Olly’s involvement with the first team recently has been restricted today he showed great fitness, commitment and energy in his performance at left back and on many occasions was in a position to help out in attack when possible. Also his defensive performance was first rate and never let the St Andrews strikers get a sniff of goal form his side of the park . And to top it off a well struck free kick goal so he can be pleased with his contribution as can all the rest of the lads.
So Spixworth up next and hopefully we can keep the momentum going. Certainly if we play like we did yesterday for the rest of the season we will certainly be up near the top at the finish and may just maybe Yorkie might have a rather large cup to fill !!!! ;D
