At last after 7 weeks in a plaster cast I finally managed to get back to the club to resume looking after someone else’s problems and not my own torn Achilles against near neighbours North walsham! Was great to see Yorkie looking well and still enthusiastic after some indifferent results of late along with his assistant Dave Harty. Also joining us today was first team technical director Steve Eastaugh ,who was here due to no first team game. Good of Steve to give up his valuable free Sat in order to give the reserve lads a bit of his technical advice and assist the reserve management in any way possible to try and get 3 points in the bag.
The team itself looked fairly strong with many reserve regulars being joined by the vastly experienced first team stalwarts Damion Hilton and Shaun Howes along with the explosive and lightening quick new first team regular Jordan Rocastle. This married to the returning Craig Terrington and Danny Boswell, it looked like we really had good chance of getting the points from a game that we knew would always be a battle.
The game itself was in fairness was quite one sided with our lads having most of the possession and with Damion Hilton at centre half looking his usual composed self, Liam Still was a virtual spectator for most of the first half with only a couple of routine saves to make. Our midfield of Jordan Mace and the tireless Danny Boswell quickly gained the upper hand and regularly fed half decent balls up to our front pair of the lively Thacker and Rocastle. It took only 8 mins before we scored with Luke Thacker tucking away with a good finish after some tidy work on the by line by the ever improving young Ben Jones. A second quickly followed with a shot from outside the box by Jordan Rocastle, which somehow deceived the walsham keeper with its swerve. Great we all thought on the bench ,with a two goal cushion we could push on a rack up, a few more goals but it was not to be and we went in at just the two goals.
During the break Yorkie gave his view of the proceedings and told the lads that if they kept the tempo up they could rack up a few goals here as to be honest the opposition were not at their best today. So after a few more words of encouragement we took to the field and promptly further dismantled a flimsy North Walsham rear guard with further goals from Luke Thacker, Sam Harty and a brace from Damion Hilton ,who by this time had been pushed up front due to two players from the opposition getting red cards, the first for spitting from a particularly unpleasant individual and the second for one of our old players Ben “squid” Atkins for a second yellow.
So at the final whistle a 6-0 win and at last something for Lawro to celebrate after some baron weeks. Was particularly pleasing to see everyone giving full support to young Yorkie who I imagine must have been feeling under a bit of pressure going into this game. Probably not helped by the pre match changing room banter about his predicament by one or two of the lads with Damion Hilton leading the jibes by highlighting his precarious position on more than one occasion !!! To be fair to Yorkie he took the lambasting in great spirit and could probably sense the irony in Damo’s comments as Damion himself has felt more than his fair share of management pressure in his time at Wroxham Fc !
Some good on field displays as well with Shaun Howes at left back showing why he was once probably the best at that position in the Ridgeon’s league and young Rio Starkings who at just 16 years old, seems to get better and better every game and who must be a virtual stick on for a first team position in the next few years. Also some very workman like performances from Danny Boswell and Jordan Mace who both kerbed their attacking ambitions in order to protect our back four and allow the lightening quick young strike force of Jordan Rocastle and Luke Thacker to steal the more attacking glamorous limelight. Another who stood out was Ben Jones who has nearly every quality that a top midfielder can hope to have in his armoury and showed in many spells in this game why he is tracked by many pro clubs.
But I have to give top marks on the day to my old friend Damion Hilton , not only his on centre half display, which was as majestic as usual, but his constant mickey taking of Lawro throughout the game, which was to be honest was very funny and which I’m sure did alleviate some of the pressure form yorkies very broad shoulders !! Got too sat though Damo –I think you were brave ribbing Yorkie when you were playing in a pair of white boots that looked as if they had been produced by a mixture Crocs and Dr Scholl !!!!
