An away trip for our reserves last Sat with a visit to Loddon, a place that we have found a happy hunting ground in recent seasons but unfortunately not so on this occasion.
We arrived to find once again the line up had changed but this time managers York and Harty had the luxury of some experienced and seasoned campaigners to include in the form of the Wroxham stalwart and first team management member John Edridge and Regular first team player and inspirational midfield war horse Gavin Lemmon. We also welcomed back Rio Starkings and Craig Terrington from first team duties so along with our usual squad of talented players we certainly had ,on paper, a team strong enough to collect a vital win that was certainly required.
As well documented before tho, sometimes strong teams on paper don’t propel themselves on to the pitch and probably this was the case in this game. We started the game fairly brightly with a 4-5-1 set up preferred by the management, which did pose Loddon quite a few problems although we did seem to once again lack that bit of quality in the final third when it came to manufacturing guilt-edged chances, a problem that we seem to have on a regular basis at the moment.
The formation that Lawro and Dave set out was, in fairness, a fairly attack minded set up with Terrington and Ashley Mitchell on the wings , Edridge and Sam Harty in the centre and the ever improving Jordan Mace just playing behind the lone striker Jamie George. Gavin Lemmon reverted back to centre half along with Rio Starkings with young Danny Rust and Ali Durrant at full backs.Liam Still was again in the sticks. Certainly no lack of pace and attacking options and this did look a forcefull team and during the first half we did try to play some nice football on what was a sticky ,bumpy surface but Loddon are a well drilled and physically strong defensive outfit so getting half decent chances was going to be tough but we did make some inroads into the opposition penalty area but could never quite get a clear cut opportunity to score. Sadly tho and, like some kind of proverbial curse, we once again ,as in previous weeks, conceded a totally needless free kick just outside our area on 40 mins and from the kick a Loddon player found the bottom corner of our net.Totally at that time against the run of play and Loddons first meaningfull attack mainly due to our back four being so commanding. We kicked off again and tried to get level before the break but once again could not breach a stubborn Loddon rear guard. So in at the break 1-0 down and although we shaded it,thankfull to Liam Stills excellent one handed save mid way through the half to keep us within touching distance.
During the break once again Lawro and Dave went through our pro and cons and it would be far to say that apart from our low-shot count there was not too much wrong with the rest of our play.So back out for the lads and a chance to get level quite quickly.
The second half kicked off with us raising the tempo of the game considerably and with the now vociferous Gavin Lemmon urging his team mates on we did lay siege to the loddon goal and eventually won a penalty for handball which Jamie George put away with some style .Got to say Jamie deserves special praise in recent weeks while playing the lone striker as he has taken a real physical battering from opposition players but always gets up again and plays with real desire for the club-fantastic to see in such a very young lad. So 1-1 and we all think we would go on and seal a win but sadly not as virtually straight away we concede another sloppy goal.Hard to say if this was an individual error or collective but certainly gave our bench a frustrating time. But once again we came back and it was our talisman Jamie George who put us level with a great finnish in the box-surely this time we could go on and steel a win against a resilient but not overly great Loddon outfit? Once again , like some twisted tale form the twilight zone, we allowed a Loddon player time in our box in the 85 min to poke the ball into our net and sadly this time there was no coming back as the game petered out to a conclusion and another defeat.
Suppose it would be easy to say we did’nt deserve this defeat as all the lads played well but on the other hand it could be said that we had a team which was more than strong enough to beat a team who were languishing 3 places from the foot of the table so it was an awfull performance. Definately some good individual performances with Jordan Mace once again catching the eye with some neat footwork and a great work rate along with Jamie George who looks real quality for such a tender age. But performance of the day ,for me has to be Gavin Lemmon who demonstrated with his commitment, leadership and physical attributes which the rest of the lads need to comprehend in order to ever have a chance of progressing to our first eleven.
So on to Wells away next week and certainly looks like a must win game now-Lets hope the lads can deliver a win or without being to dramatic time could be running out!
