At last after 6 weeks recuperation from my troublesome Achilles injury I managed to get back to help young Yorkie and Dave Harty with the visit of Blofield to Trafford Park.
You always know that this is going to be a difficult fixture as Blofield are always a well drilled and enthusiastic outfit and with the inclusion of at least 3 recent ex-Wroxham players this looked a tough game, particularly for such a young side that Lawro had at his disposal.
To be honest we started at a good pace and with the 5 man midfield that lawro had set out we looked more than a match for a very experienced Blofield team which are sure to be up and around the top 3 come April. Things were quite even up until the 20th min when once again the Wroxham curse of defensive mistakes reared its ugly head. Kris Hart was allowed far too much space and time to carry the ball into our half before slotting a ball through to the ever dangerous Chris Holmes who ran at Olly Joyce but sadly young Olly rather backed out of a challenge and chose rather to foul the player. Sadly a completely wrong choice as Holmes picked himself up and nonchantly hit the resulting free kick into the top corner of the net giving Liam Still no chance. So 1-0 but to the lads credit they still carried on playing some good stuff and to a man were carrying out the game plan and strategy that Lawro had instructed pre match. Sadly though we were undone again through another lapse of defensive indecision in our right back area which allowed a cross to reach a Blofield player who slotted in quite calmly to make it 2-0 and now a bit of a mountain for the lads to climb. From the kick off once again we huffed and puffed and created some decent chances but just didn’t have the killer instinct around the box although the the vastly improving Jamie George cracked a shot against the Blofield crossbar. So in at 2-0 and some serious work for the management team to sort out.
During the interlude both Lawro and Dave pointed out our frailties and told the lads how to correct them and it was refreshing to see that such a young bunch of lads did look quite attentive to every word Lawro spoke .So out again and everyone hoping that we could get an early goal ,sadly it never arrived and even with the introduction of the experienced Josh Carus at centre half, we could not break down a well marshalled and experienced Blofield back four. I think we looked the better side in this half ,as we had done in much of the first(although the next time i see Paddy Murphy in the Whale bone im sure he will tell me different !!!) but we could not fabricate real clear cut chances to test the opposition keeper .Once again we paid the price with Blofield scoring a third to give a rather flattering scoreline. Finally tho we did get a consolation with a tidy finnish from close range by Sam Holt in the 87th min.
So sadly another defeat and and we are sliding down the league at an ominous rate. Hard to blame the young lads for this loss as their application was spot on but they must learn to keep switched on through the complete 90+ mins and make sure that they get focused pre match and may be not worry so much about how their hair looks in the dressing room mirror as i witnessed first hand myself yesterday !(Olly Joyce!!!!)
Still some good performances on the field with Jordan Mace and Ashley Mitchell impressing in our midfield and Ally Durrant hardly missed a thing at centre half but best performance by a country mile, was young Sam Harty in the centre midfield position.I don’t think there was a blade of grass that he did’nt cover yesterday and his tackling , ball retention and distribution was first class, certainly a gem for the future if he keeps these performances up.
So off to Loddon next week .Do seem to remember getting some decent results here in past seasons so lets hope the trend continues as we really do need to get some points back on the board.
