After the past 2weeks where the lads have won at both Wells and North Walsham away from home, they followed these results with a very confident 2-0 home win again against Wells.
Once again managers Yorke and Harty had a very young squad to choose from with probably only Craig Terrington and Jordan Mace being well into their 20’s, the rest of the team being mainly players from our under 18’s. But although they are short on numerical years they certainly are not short on ability or ambition and this was displayed yesterday to good effect against a very resolute albeit not technically gifted, Wells team.
For this game the joint management decided on a 4-3-3 system with a back four of Rio Starkings, Jordan Southgate, Craig Terrington, and Danny Rust. In midfield the experienced Danny Boswell was the holding midfielder with Jordan Mace and and Sam harty either side of him. Up top once again the talismanic Jamie George, who was the spearhead of the attack with the youthful powerhouses of Luke Thacker and Sam Holt either side providing pace and a constant attacking threat. In the sticks as usual was Liam Still, who has certainly improved his goal keeping credentials in the last few weeks and was once again looking to impress manager Yorke, who has been a little critical of the young keeper at times. Definitely on paper this looked a pretty good team and as it turned out this proved to be the case with the lads certainly enjoying 75% of the possession and attacking threat throughout this game.
The game itself, as I have suggested, was slightly one sided our lads doing most of the attacking and Wells happy to soak up the pressure and try and hit us on the break through their lively 2 frontmen. May be if I was being truthful that is the way that we are undone in a lot of games as our defence does seem to lose its concentration at times and leaks silly goals-a point that manager Yorke did try to impress upon the lads during the pre-match talk. But he had no reason to fear in this game, as our back five did their individual jobs with great confidence. Both centre halve Starkings and Southgate kept the Wells attack quiet whilst both fullbacks Terrington and the impressive Danny Rust not only defended but attacked with great tenacity as well with the young Rust looking an excellent full back prospect for the future with his great first touch and cool on the ball technique. On the rear occasions Wells did manufacture a goal scoring opportunity keeper Still did his job to good effect.
So back to the game and although we were playing some neat one touch passing football we could not fashion a real clear chance this was until Sam Harty was brought down outside the box after a surging run and Craig Terrington stepped up to take the resulting kick. In past weeks Craig has been top notch with his execution of free kicks and this pretty much followed the same vein as his 20 yard effort crashed of the base of the post with the keeper well beaten but as usual the fox in the box Jamie George was switched on and on hand to stab home the ball home and give us a well deserved lead. It seemed that we might kick on from there and rack up one or two more but sadly it did happen and although Wells had one or two passages of decent play the half petered out still with a 1-0 score line. During the break both managers Yorke and Harty did give the lads some praise on their performance but did fairly point out it was still only 1-0 and anything could happen .A point the lads took on board as they headed out for the second half.
The next half went pretty much the same as the first with us keeping ball retention and playing some neat one-twos and the Wells team happy to let us play and try and fashion chances on the break. We finally got our second goal on the 60 min mark when another excellent corner delivery from Terrington was nodded home by Jordan Mace from 6 yards out. Great reward for Jordan, as he was putting in a good shift against a physical Wells midfield. After this we had one or two good chances mainly from the lively Luke Thacker but their keeper was in excellent form and denied us with some good saves. So the final whistle and a good solid 2-0 win . Probably we deserved more goals but as I said their keeper was in inspired form and was certainly their man of the match by a mile!
A good solid performance with every player doing the job that the management had asked of them. Individually Jordan Southgate looked every inch a commanding centre half with great leadership quality although I know he hates playing there!!! Danny Boswell did his usual energetic and battling performance in midfield and looks to be getting back to his best after a troublesome ankle injury. Luke Thacker was always an attacking threat and his work rate is phenomenal for such a young lad. At full back Craig Terrington didn’t put a foot wrong and either defending or attacking and his experience shone through. But my performance of the day goes to our young full back Danny Rust who looked like he had been at this level of football for years with his touch and all round game. Hard to believe that Danny is only just 17 and although his frame is quite slight he has the ability to use his positional technique to outplay much larger opponents. Certainly a great prospect for the future.
So off the seaside next week and a real test against the big boys in this league- Cromer FC. Let’s hope we can give them a bit of a footballing lesson and get a good result as it would give a great lift to the young lads themselves and set us up for a high finish in the league-Something I think both Lawrence Yorke and Dave Harty deserve.
